What It’s Like To Be a San Diego Family

“A simple life is good with me. I don’t need a whole lot. For me, a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, barefoot on a beach and I’m happy.” -Yanni

San Diego Family

When I was writing about what it’s like to be a San Diego Family, I couldn’t help but smile. After all, after having a family of my own up in Canada, my husband and I sold our home and gave away everything we owned despite a few suitcases full of clothes, jumped in our car and made the 2,500+ mile road trip to San Diego to begin a new life!

I spent 10 years dreaming of California while living in Toronto, Canada and for at least the last 5, I slept with pictures of San Diego sceneries taped to my ceiling above my bed. I was always dreaming about a day when I would be a real, live San Diegan myself. It wasn’t until years later when a change in business and income gave us the freedom to FINALLY take the leap and make a cross country move. It was totally worth it! If you’re thinking of moving your family to San Diego, here is why it’s a no-brainer:

Sunshine, 7 days a week! The morning of New years day 2015, my family drove into Southern California. The sky was a brilliant blue, not a cloud in sight. Gorgeous palm trees lined the roads and already it felt like paradise. We took the exit marked “San Diego” and I felt my heart skip a beat – IT’S HAPPENING! It wasn’t long until we pulled into our new luxury apartment complex which looked more like a resort than an “apartment.” Everything just seemed so clean and well kept in this city – of course they didn’t have to deal with the grime and dirt that accumulates through heavy winter! Sunshine has been proven to be great for your health (read this article about six reasons why the sun is surprisingly good for you) and I just knew this move would be wonderful for my family!

Year round family-friendly activities! In the past year, we surely have become our own little San Diego Family. My husband, myself and our 4 year old daughter have enjoyed this little slice of heaven immensely and now we are expecting baby #2 in June. Raising a family in San Diego is so much fun… The year round weather allows for beautiful outdoor walks, picnics and outings in any season. It’s easy to stay active with walks on the beach, so many hiking options, paddle boarding and kayaking (check out San Diego Lifestyle’s experience with kayaking in La Jolla), bike riding on the board walks and all sorts of out door options. San Diego is the perfect city to help your family maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, with barely any effort.

Cost-Effective Family Activities! It’s super affordable to have fun in San Diego because of how many free options there are for outings as a family. Most beaches have free parking and when you pack some food and towels you have all you need with the waves and sand. There are countless attractions that are big family fun as well like Sea World, Lego Land, the famous San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park. Easy afternoons can be spent at the children’s museum or exploring Balboa park. A favorite for young kids are outdoor parks which this city is full of! No matter where you turn in San Diego, there is something to do that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and it’s waiting for your family!

Incredible food! Lastly, for a night out as a family, the food scene in San Diego is amazing. Check out Sea Port Village to watch the sunset, ride a carousel & grab a variety of food from Greek, Italian, Mexican, American or Seafood. Then, check out all the adorable shops they have there. From Oceanside to Hillcrest, Del Mar, downtown and beyond, there are many great restaurants in San Diego that provide you with a wonderful family atmosphere!

All in all, we are so so so happy we moved to San Diego. As the kids grow there are so many extra curricular activities they can participate in & this is a climate where they can be outside all year long enjoying fresh air and easy, enjoyable exercise! A win win all around for parents and growing littles. Let me know what your family loves about San Diego, I would love to hear from you! 🙂
