Talented Artists Bring Best Contemporary Art in the World to Art San Diego
“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” -Scott Adams
Art San Diego is an incredible three day event “featuring established and emerging artists, galleries and publishers from around the globe.” Truly a worldwide experience, this contemporary art show is an annual event here in San Diego. This was my first year attending, but it is the eighth year they have held it. Here are my favorite aspects of Art San Diego:
The artists are by far my favorite aspect of this art show. (Here are a list of the exhibitors.) Not only are the pieces stunning on their own, but when you’re able to learn the story behind the paintings or photographs, it brings the pieces to life in a new, refreshing way. My favorite artist of the entire show was based out of San Clemente here in California, but others I admired had traveled from other states and even countries to display their work. When you attend this art show, you get to spend time getting to know the artist and their work on a deeper level. Getting to ask questions and hear responses right from the artist to you personally provides an extra level of intimacy and value to the piece itself.
Obviously the artwork is going to be one of my favorite aspects of the show. Walking around the floor, there were large sculptures, paintings, photographs, and more. There was even a very large sculpture created out of Perrier water can material. The sculptures caught my eye as I was walking around, but there were no posted prices on them, and didn’t seem to be artists around them, so I was unsure if they were truly for sale. The contemporary artwork was entertaining to view and allowed me to spend time getting to know more of my fun side. My fiancé and I kept trying to decide how we could ever incorporate some of the more modern, colorful pieces into our future home. Even though we couldn’t come to agreement on any more contemporary piece, we did spend a good amount of time looking at one, more floral gallery. There were some reasonably priced pieces that were just gorgeous.
The different materials used in these art pieces is incredible. From glass, to metal, to the more normal materials like acrylic on canvas, every material was unique and brought the art to a new light. Some of my favorite mixed uses of the materials were the acrylic on canvas mixed with glass. It was amazing to see how the artists transformed the mediums they were working with to create something more modern, out-of-the-box, and innovative. Every material used was clearly thought out and looked impressive. The large horse sculptures were amazing, and the material used was sturdy and heavy. They were eye-catching pieces that really showcased the contemporary art aspect of this event.
This year UBS is the main sponsor, and they hosted a large VIP party with an early viewing of the art this year, so it was great to get in to experience the art before the rest of the crowd. Along with the early art viewing, UBS also hosted a get together on the back patio of the art show building. Between walking the rows of art galleries, we stepped out to enjoy the fresh air in Balboa Park, along with some light appetizers and drinks provided by UBS. There was a smaller horse statue out by the bar which I fell in love with, especially after seeing the way it lit up in the evening lighting.
The art show is an event not to miss. Every piece is for sale, and you can purchase worldwide works of art from unbelievable artists. How incredible. Make sure to check it out today or tomorrow in Balboa Park! Get your tickets online here (you can also buy them at the door), and let us know what art pieces were your favorite, and if you purchased anything, what drew you to it?
