Farmers Insurance Open – A San Diego Tradition

See the Greatest Professional Golfers in the World at the Farmers Insurance Open

“If you watch a game, it’s fun. If you play it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.” -Bob Hope

Farmers Insurance Open

The Farmers Insurance Open is “San Diego’s prestigious PGA Tour golf tournament played at Torrey Pines Golf Course.” It starts on Thursday, January 26th and ends on Sunday, January 29th. You can buy tickets for all four days here or you can purchase just an individual, one day pass. Last year, my fiancé Patrick and I spent the final day in the Merrill Lynch and Bank of America VIP tent which overlooked the 18th green of the South Course. We saw some amazing golf shots, especially with a super difficult pin position in the back corner of the green. If you haven’t seen this green, there is water in front and sand traps in the back. Even as amazing as the golf shots were, even the pros make mistakes. It was really interesting and fun to watch! I started golfing a few years ago, and I always find it fascinating to be able to relate to the professional golfers when you see their shots go in the sand trap, or way off the fairway into the woods (or crowd). The pros usually recover their not-so-good shots in an amazing way though, a talent I am still working on.

Last year we stayed in the VIP tent for most of the day, but we also walked around a little bit. This course makes it easy to just come for a few hours and walk around, getting to see your favorite golfers and enjoy the fun, but not feel the pressure to stay all day. There are benches, picnic areas, and general admission stands to sit in throughout the courses in various areas. This is a family fun event, so feel free to bring the kids! Watching professional golfers is a ton of fun, but there are a few things you should keep in mind when heading to Torrey Pines in a few weeks for this event:

Keep calm and quiet. This is probably the most important thing to keep in mind when you’re at the Farmers Insurance Open. Whether you’re eating, having drinks with your friends, or walking the entire course following after your favorite pro player, you MUST keep quiet. It is respectful to the players and to others, and proper etiquette when at any golf tournament. Don’t worry if you forget, there are a lot of people around who will constantly remind you, and even volunteers that hold up “Keep Quiet” signs when the golfers are hitting.

Spend time in a VIP tent. Whether you’re invited into one, or buy tickets to one, spend time in a VIP tent during the tournament! Especially Saturday and Sunday, after the cut, the top pros who are playing the best golf will all be playing the South Course. You will want to be up close and personal. Most VIP events at the Farmers Insurance Open include food and drink, and give you an optimal view of the tourney. You cannot walk around to the areas that have views of the greens like the VIP tents do. If you enjoy watching golf live, the tents are definitely something you will want to consider.

Don’t miss the after parties. During tournament hours, the Michelob Ultra 19th Hole (which includes concessions and many tables to sit and enjoy some “people watching”) and the ZTE Grove (which includes a mobile phone charging station and a Grey Goose Lounge) are the places to be. You can also hang out in the SERVPRO Fan Village, located behind the 15th green, which is where the after-parties are! The Fringe is a bar in the fan village that offers close viewing of the 15th green while you enjoy refreshments with your friends during the day, but be sure to stay after the golf each day to enjoy the live music from local bands Thursday through Saturday!

You will have a spectacular time at the Farmer’s Insurance Open this year! Just remember to go early to find parking, and only bring in what you need. (There is a limit on bag sizes, check here.) Even though it is the middle of winter, it is San Diego, so it will most likely be sunny and warm. Make sure to bring sunscreen and drink lots of water during the day! This tournament is a golf spectacle not to miss, and there is TONS of fun to be had. Have you been to this tournament before? Let us know if you think Tiger Woods will stay on top of the leaderboard this year!
