Why Barrel Republic is a Craft Beer Lover’s Dream Come True

Receive a Wristband and Experience Barrel Republic in Carlsbad

“Not all girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Some girls are made of barley and hops and a pair of flip flops.” -Unknown

Imagine if you could sample and pour your own perfect beer (or wine) when you go out to eat…wouldn’t that be amazing? This new trend has moved to over San Diego and is in full swing at Barrel Republic.

So how does it work? When you walk into a location (currently in Pacific Beach, Oceanside, and Carlsbad), the host/hostess will help you create your tab with a credit card and in return you’ll get a wristband. The wristband has a sensor that you scan at each tap to pour your choice of beer or wine.

When you scan your wristband, you can control how much of a pour you desire. So whether you want to sample a few, create your own food and beverage pairing, or go straight to your beloved tap, you’re in control. For a beer list, click here.

I really enjoyed the layout of this restaurant. If you love to people watch, they have garage doors in the front window with a bar top. If you enjoy being among the action of the self serve taps, you might enjoy the interior dining section. Or if you’re looking for a quieter table (minus the train) with fresh air, the back patio will fulfill your desired ambiance.

When I go some place new, I love asking the staff, management, and/or owners what their favorites are from the menu. The Chile Dusted Crispy Pickle Chips came up more than once and I’m a sucker for pickles, so that was a must. Not only were they perfectly crispy, but the cayenne dip served with them was the perfect complement.

Barrel Republic has an extensive list of appetizers to please everyone, and they’re hearty too. For a taste of seafood, try the Mini Crabcake Bites. The crabcakes were packed full of crab, but what I liked most about this dish was the preserved lemon peel that is garnished on top. It brought a nice vibrancy and acidity to the dish. The Garlic Butter Pretzel Bites, are also a must because they arrive swimming in a pool of garlic butter, how fantastic is that?!

I’m not down with the fungi, but my dinner date loves mushrooms and took a chance on the Vegan Wild Mushroom “French Dip” Flatbread…which basically means mushroom heaven for some. And who wouldn’t want to dunk their flatbread in some delicious au jus?

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m totally smitten with grilled cheese sandwiches, so when I saw Crispy Avocado Grilled Cheese on the menu, I was sold! This toasted cheese sandwich oozes with melted mozzarella, crispy avocado, and a flavorful pesto. It’s the kind of sandwich I’d order again and again.

In my world, it’s a requirement to end every meal with dessert, and this was no exception. After some great appetizers, and entrees, we were ready for a deliciously light crème brulee with berries. The chef might have made our presentation a little extra pretty, and it was well worth his effort.

Barrel Republic is the kind of place you’ll want to spend a leisure evening.  Between the self pour beer system, great bites, and a nice fire table on the patio, you can’t go wrong.

For our visit, we went to the Carlsbad location. This location is right in the heart of Carlsbad Village, on the quaintest street of shops and eats with available parking. For more information about events in Carlsbad Village, click here.
