“We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.” -Make-A-Wish Mission
Today was a big day for San Diego Lifestyle Blog. We sponsored our very first hole in a golf tournament, and what better charity to raise awareness for than Make-A-Wish! Since 1980, Make-A-Wish has helped bring strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Make-A-Wish has a San Diego chapter that specifically helps children in San Diego and Imperial Counties who are in these positions. The average wish costs $8,500 and there are over 300 children in San Diego every year that are diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. This charity goes above and beyond for the children they serve, and today it was truly apparent how wonderful this organization is!
The Crosby golf course and Make-A-Wish teamed up just one day after the course was played by President Obama here in Rancho Santa Fe, to provide golfers with a fun scramble format on a fairly challenging course. The Crosby is known for its generous fairways and dramatic elevation changes. The scenery is beautiful, and the North County San Diego backdrop is as tranquil as it gets. Golfers today enjoyed an 18-hole round preceded by a silent raffle auction and luncheon. After each foursome completed their round, they were treated to a dinner and awards ceremony as well. San Diego Lifestyle Blog was excited to be a part of something bigger in the community, so we jumped at this chance to sponsor a tee-hole for Make-A-Wish!
We were stationed up at the tee box for hole #6, where we set up our table and passed out sunscreen to help keep players protected from the hot sun! The sixth hole was a Hole-In-One challenge, but I did not see anyone get a hole in one today.
I did see a lot of players having fun though, which often times is the most important aspect of the golf game. At our table, we also held a San Diego Lifestyle Blog raffle for three Starbucks gift cards. Some of the main sponsors today were the San Diego Padres, San Diego Chargers, and Sycuan Casino who sponsored the lunch and gave out gift bags and other fun items.
San Diego Lifestyle Blog was started as a way to give back to San Diegans when they feel lost or out of the loop with what is going on in the city. We strive to provide beneficial information through all of our stories, and love how our readers tell us what to look out for next, and send us links to events that we simply must go to. When I read about Make-A-Wish and how drastically they change children’s lives, it brought me to tears. I started thinking about how a lot of people in this country take most of the things they have for granted. There are children out there that are truly struggling with life threatening illnesses, who would do almost anything just to simply be able to grow up. Make-A-Wish gives them the hope they’re searching for to continue in their fight. We all take life too seriously when we are more concerned about the humid weather or reality tv than simply enjoying our lives. We all have something wonderful we can take away from Make-A-Wish, even if it is only the idea that life isn’t meant to be about the material things. Life is meant to be about the small, meaningful moments.
Together with Make-A-Wish and The Crosby, today everyone helped to raise over $90,000.00 toward children’s wishes here in San Diego. There are 270 children that Make-A-Wish plans to grant wishes for in the next year and a half, and you can be a big part of this becoming a reality. Make-A-Wish is always looking for volunteers, sponsors, and fundraisers to help grant wishes. There are several ways you can help. (Check them out here!) Even the smallest donation or amount of time volunteered helps give a child hope. We had a wonderful day at the golf tournament and hope this event creates a ripple affect throughout the community for Make-A-Wish.
What is your favorite charity to be a part of? Have they put on events? How were they? We would love to hear from you!
