A Few Things That I Personally Love About The Crack Shack
“The best comfort food will always be greens, cornbread, and fried chicken.” -Maya Angelou
If you’re someone who’s on a diet or likes to watch their calories, then grant yourself a cheat meal because this place is certainly worth it. The Crack Shack is a more recent addition to the booming restaurant scene in Little Italy and it has a lot of character. When you approach The Crack Shack you’ll be greeted by fun pop culture references and a huge shack where you order your food. The place certainly stands out with their wide outside seating and huge lines to order. Yes, consider that a warning especially if you plan to hit this place up during the weekend. The Crack Shack has gotten people pretty addicted to their menu, but are you even that surprised with a name like that? Here are a few things that I personally love about The Crack Shack:
1. Fried Chicken
The Crack Shack easily has the best fried chicken I’ve ever had in San Diego. There’s really no competition once you try their fried chicken out. If you take a look at the menu, one thing might shock some of you, and that is the price. The prices at The Crack Shack are a bit higher that what you’re used to seeing at most fast food fried chicken places, but the quality is also drastically different. There’s honestly no comparison because you can literally taste the difference. All the chicken and eggs that are used at The Crack Shack are locally grown right here in San Diego, so you’re always guaranteed something fresh. There’s no frozen chicken from who knows where, you’ll be getting something that is truly local and hasn’t been injected with antibiotics.
I also want to mention that this fried chicken is truly finger licking good! The chicken is covered in a savory batter and it is literally fried to perfection. If you like to take a big bite and actually hear a satisfying crunch, then you definitely won’t be disappointed with their fried chicken. The Crack Shack also has a wide array of sauces that you can pair with your fried chicken with. My personal favorites are the chimichurri and their classic ranch sauce.
2. The Sides
There’s a lot more to The Crack Shack that meets the eye, in this case their side dishes are also extremely good and worth checking out. Their Schmaltz Fried Fries are easily my favorite side and big enough to share. I feel a bit overdramatic when saying this, but those fries are truly life changing. The fries are flavorful, crunchy, and not greasy feeling at all. You can also pair the fries with one of the many sauces that they have, but my personal favorite is the ranch. Just thinking about the Schmaltz Fried Fries with their ranch sauce is making my mouth water.
If you want to go one step above and turn the fries into a meal in itself, then get the Mexican Poutine. It’s a fun south of the border take on Canadian poutine but instead of gravy and cheese curds you have the schmaltz fries, topped with pollo asado (grilled chicken), jalapeño cheese wiz, and a generous amount of cilantro. Again the portion is quite large, so this would make for a perfect side (or meal) to share with someone else.
Another great side to share are the Buffalo Mushrooms which are fried mushrooms with blue cheese, pickled celery, and carrots. These are a fun take on buffalo wings but they’re completely vegetarian. This would make for a great option if you don’t eat chicken or if you want to trick your kids into eating their vegetables. Now granted, this isn’t the healthiest way to eat vegetables but it is one of the yummiest ways to eat them.
3. The Ambiance
Apart from the food, another thing I love about the The Crack Shack is the casual and friendly environment. Sometimes hip restaurants may look a bit intimidating, but this is the complete opposite of that. There is an amazing sense of community and family at The Crack Shack which is evident right away. You see a lot of families, groups of friends, and even people bringing their dogs to enjoy some food. It’s amazing to see a place encourage people to sit down, share their food, and enjoy eating outside in sunny San Diego. The Crack Shack is an amazing place to come whether you just want to get some fresh comfort food or if you want to catch the game on one of their many TVs. There’s a full bar near the TVs and great family style tables where you can comfortably watch the games. To make things even better, there’s also an area where you can play bocce ball to burn some of the calories off.
I know this wasn’t the healthiest meal of my life, but I can easily say that this was definitely the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. So next time you’re craving a good cheat meal (or just a really good meal, there’s no shame in treating yourself), then I would highly suggest checking out The Crack Shack in Little Italy. As a bonus, you’re located in a great area to walk around and burn off even more calories! No worries, you can totally use that excuse to justify this hefty comfort food feast.
The Crack Shack is open Sunday through Thursday from 9:00AM until 10:00PM and Friday and Saturday from 9:00AM until 11:00PM.
