What is juicing?  Is it just a fad? Given that 92% of Americans are vitamin deficient, can juicing truly help you UP your wellness game?  Which juicing options are best suited for your busy lifestyle?

WHAT IS JUICING

Juicing is a process where the natural liquids, vitamins, and minerals are extracted from raw fruits and vegetables.  This process strips away any solid matter from the fruits and vegetables and you’re left with liquid only.

HOW IS JUICING HEALTHY

Think back to High School chemistry and your introduction to the pH scale.  The scale measures acidity in the body from 0 to 14 where 7 is neutral. Lower numbers indicate more acidity, and higher numbers indicate alkalinity.

TOOLS FOR JUICING

If you decide to try traditional juicing, then you’ll need the right equipment.  The big decision is which type of juicing machine to purchase. The two options are Centrifugal Juice Extractor -vs- Cold Press (aka Masticating) juicer.

Centrifugal Juice Extractors are the most common type of juicer.  They utilize a fast-spinning metal blade that spins against a mesh filter, separating juice from flesh via centrifugal force.  The problem with centrifugal juicers is heat generated by the machine, which destroys some of the enzymes in the fruits and vegetables you’re juicing. The heat also oxidizes the nutrients, rendering less nutritious juice compared to a cold-press juicer.

Cold Press Juicers extract juice by first crushing and then pressing fruit and vegetables for the highest juice yield. Because they don’t produce as much heat, they keep more of the nutrients intact.  Consider buying a cold press juicer if you’re into cleansing, making nut milks and green juices, and you’re not ultra-sensitive about cost.

JUICING VERSUS BLENDING

Some people opt for blending rather than juicing. Blending the edible parts of fruit produces a drink that contains more healthy phytonutrients and fiber. Fiber can help you feel full and improve digestion.

Here are tips for blending & juicing

  1. Limit the fruit in both juices and smoothies to 1-2 servings per drink, to prevent excess sugar.
  2. Load up on green veggies like kale, spinach, parsley, and cabbage.  They have a mild taste but help to increase satiety.
  3. Include citrus – lime juice in particular – to cut out any bitter taste from vegetables.  
  4. Use high water content vegetables like cucumbers and celery to help add volume and nutrients.
  5. Add regular water or coconut water to make the drink less pulpy.

WHAT NAYSAYERS SAY ABOUT JUICING

Despite the added health benefits, there are critics who like to point out negative aspects of juicing.  Don’t let these naysayers deter you from fully investigating juicing. Keep in mind the following:

  1. Juicing alone may not help you lose weight.
  2. Juicing may lead to blood sugar swings if you’re adding too many fruits.
  3. Juicing may result in lower fiber compared to eating whole fruit and veggies.
  4. Juicing can get expensive, messy and time consuming.
