 Getting the Pumpkins

There are a number of really great pumpkin patches all over San Diego County that are like mini-carnivals with rides and games for the kids. I took my daughter and son and they totally enjoyed the festival experience. Here are a few of our favorite pumpkin patches near our home:

-Across the street from the Del Mar Fairgrounds
-At the intersection of El Camino Real and San Digiato Road near the Polo Fields
-At the corner of Encinitas Blvd and Rancho Santa Fe Road
We decided to get our pumpkins at the Encinitas location that has games, rides, and a petting zoo.

Carving and Decorating the Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins is the most popular Halloween activity in the nation. Here in The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe, carving pumpkins goes above and beyond the norm. Last night, our family headed down to the tennis center for the Halloween festivities. Since we had already picked-out our pumpkins last week at the little pumpkin patch in Encinitas, we were all set. The Bridges staff had a small pumpkin patch set up last night for those families who hadn’t picked theirs out already. We took our pumpkins over to the “gutting station” where we could cut-off the top and dig out the guts! (Or if you prefer, The Bridges staff can do it for you!)

My son, Ky wanted to carve his top off himself, so I let him, and of course he carved a circle. I didn’t even think about it, but once it was cut, the top just fell right through and didn’t actually stay on top. Well, next year we’ll remember that for sure!

Once our pumpkins were cleaned out we headed over to our table and looked at stencils and other fun decorations. There were tons of people at the party having fun and enjoying the beautiful Fall evening. It makes me feel incredibly happy to know that I don’t have to wear snow pants to take my son Trick-or-Treating like I did in Michigan.

I carved a witches face in my pumpkin which had all sorts of bumps all over it, and Ky tried to carve a face free-handed, but ended up picking out a stencil with a cool face. He carved out my witches face while I carved his face on his. Halfway through, we made sure to stop for a snack break. They had donuts, lemonade, cider, candy and more! They gave each child a Halloween treat bag to take home as well. My fiancé found a cool stencil and carved a skeleton face into his pumpkin. He was happy to see tools at the tables. He commented about how cool the little and big saws were for carving versus the kitchen knives he used as a kid. They even had these scraping tools in the gutting area that made it way easier than using a big kitchen spoon! They had every tool you could imagine to help carve your pumpkin! Or, like some families, if you didn’t want to carve and make a Jack-O-Lantern, you could just decorate the pumpkin. The Bridges staff thinks of everything!

When we finished carving our pumpkins, we took a family photo in the pumpkin patch, and ate a few more snacks. It was a super fun Fall evening in California. Ahhh…I love living here!

Plan for Trick-Or-Treating

We plan to go Trick-Or-Treating in the Bridges. It is really an awesome experience.  It is super safe in our little gated community, and we get to use the golf cart going from home to home. The kids are excited and so are we! What are your Halloween plans this year? Are your pumpkins carved and ready? Where are you heading out to trick-or-treat? Let us know!
