Waves, Friends, and Sea Lions at La Jolla Cove
“Let the Waves hit your Feet & The Sand Be your Seat.” -Anonymous
Stepping out of the car in La Jolla, California, the familiar smell of salt and sea spray fills the air. Palms sway gently in the misty evening. The sky is a bit overcast but streaked with glimpses of pink and orange. We walk along the cement pathway until we hit a green grassy meadow and some stairs that lead down into a little beach where clear blue waters crash against the shore. Carefully we make our way down to the sand and immediately I remove my shoes – relishing in the feel of cool sand under my feet. WOW – we had been told to come here to La Jolla Cove by many locals and they were right, it is beautiful. (For all areas of La Jolla beaches, see here.)
The La Jolla Cove is really more like multiple coves, with an awesome little beach in between where wild sea lions gather to nap in the sun, rest on the shore and play in the waves. It is hard to pick your favorite thing about the cove – the wild life? The captivating sunsets? The little cliffs that mix and intertwine with small coves of shell littered sand and crashing clear blue waters? Something is most definitely unique about it here.
I note the crowd it attracts is also in awe of it’s beauty; most people happily snapping pictures and rolling up their pants to toe dip in the ocean as it kisses the sand. A beautiful pregnant woman is meditating on the top of one cliff atop a lovely decorative blanket. Peace – that is the overall feeling and energy of this place. Each time the waves recede we venture further along the beach, eager to explore every nook and crany of this wild pocket of heaven.
We discover little hidden caves and nooks where the lighting for pictures is brilliant – a photographer’s dream! Not to mention the patterned layers of earth as the cliff walls rise up to the pathway above. Sun has now set and the sky is dancing with color – a stunning combination with the crashing waves. Sea spray shoots into the air near the cliff sides and the tide pulls closer to the shore. We make quick work to climb back up the stairs and continue watching darkness take over the sky from a safe height.
Since that first time at the cove I have gone back countless times, both for day trips, views of the sea lions, but mostly for the sunsets. It’s a favorite or even MUST-SEE when we have people in town to visit. The calm and peaceful energy there always rejuvenates the soul & pleases the eye! This isn’t the beach I would take small children to swim as the waves can be intense and some parts of the sea shore can be rocky. However the more experienced swimmer and certainly any snorkelers would LOVE how clear the waters are and how fun the intense waves can be to play in!
If you want stunning picture opportunities and a romantic place to watch the sunset or just appreciate a more “wild” side to the beach life – check out La Jolla Cove! It’s about 20 minutes north of San Diego and there are also lots of great shopping
close by on Prospect Place. Have you been there? Let me know what your favorite part of La Jolla Cove is! I’d love to hear all about it.
