There is nothing more special to a woman than her wedding day. My wedding was August 12th, 2017, and I will never forget that day in Coronado. (Watch the full wedding video here!) My fiancé and I looked around all over San Diego to find the best location for our ceremony, and I spent over a year planning every little detail. It was one of the most incredible times of my life, and I know every woman feels that way (at least some of the time) throughout the process!

She visualizes herself in a beautiful princess wedding dress, with a beautiful bouquet of flowers in the perfect venue. She works hard to bring it all together and everyone in her life celebrates with her. (My entire family came from Michigan for the wedding!) But sometimes, those parties, shopping trips, and lunch dates, cake tastings, and dinners begin to show up on your hips and waist as the wedding date is getting dangerously near, and for me, that was NOT a good feeling at all.

I did not want to make any more adjustments to my dress, and I wanted to look FIT and HOT on that final day! I knew I had to do a few minor things to keep up with my lavish wedding-planning lifestyle that I had so welcomely adapted, but even those adjustments were enjoyable too! Here are my top 3 ideas for how you can lose a few extra pounds while you are planning your wedding by being smart, and adding a little FUN to your routine!

 

1. Eat a high protein diet with variety.

Start with your food. This is not the time for fad diets. I knew if I was going to go full-out on cake tasting, I would have to go full-out on a serious nutrition plan also. High protein diets are very popular for people who want to lose weight fast. But what do they do to your body? When you cut out carbohydrates and eat mostly protein, the first thing that your body does is lose water. After that, with no carbs to burn for energy, your body turns directly to your stored body fat to make your body work. The weight-loss is dramatic, and even though I only needed to lose a few pounds, having a high protein diet allowed me to be able to enjoy planning to the fullest.

Many people think high protein diets are all lean meats and eggs, but I actually ate other things too! While meats and eggs are high in protein, there are many other foods that are nutritious, delicious, and high protein. Here are a few that I ate pre-wedding more than ever before:

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dried fruits
  • Beans and lentils
  • Tofu

 

 

2. Drink water. (Do NOT skip this part!)

Very cold water makes the stomach contract. Drinking a glass of ice water 20 minutes before your meal will cause your stomach to contract, so, you will get full with less food. Hot liquids have the opposite effect. It is wise to stay away from hot liquids which will expand the stomach while you are dieting. Usually I would drink a glass of cold water with ice in the morning as soon as I woke up, and again in the evening before dinner at least.

I had been adding protein to my diet and exercise to my routine, so I was more dehydrated than usual. (Not to mention, I was running all around town looking at different reception locations, and meeting with florists and musicians.) These changes to your diet and exercise cause you to lose water. You must stay hydrated if you want healthy skin, shining hair, and healthy nails. Further, you need water to keep your organs functioning. Nothing can ruin a wedding faster than an illness. So drink up!

The extra water will also give you clear skin, shiny hair, and moist lips. These things are pretty important for your wedding photos.

3. Dance the pounds away.

I know this may sound weird, but the very word exercise makes me cringe. I knew there was no way I was going to start doing two-a-days at the gym to be able to eat cake. People usually start that plan out well, hitting the gym every day or two, but soon they find excuses to skip it. (I’m the queen of excuses.) The key to getting exercise is doing something you enjoy! If you like to swim, ride bikes, or take walks in the park, do it. Or, step out of the box and do something you always wanted to do, like taking a dance class.

Why dance?

Dance burns calories and tones the muscles. It also adds to your agility and stamina. You can do this as a group or solo. Whether it’s a Barre Class (like this one I took at Pure Barre in Carmel Valley) or a hip hop class at your local gym (FIT Athletic in Solana Beach has some great classes) dancing can be so fun, and a great way to shed a few pounds! Invest in some dance supplies and sign up! Tights help tone your muscles: you need proper shoes and dance outfits that allow your body to move. Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before, it’s easy, and no one is judging you!

If you want to, make this a group activity. Your bridesmaids may have a few extra pounds to burn off so they will look their best as well. Tell them where you’re headed, and they’ll be interested I am sure!
